Your Juvederm Questions Answered
Rhode Island Juvederm Injections
Age has its benefits – wisdom, memories, and a stronger sense of self. But time can creep up on us, sapping the plump, youthful appearance we had when we were younger. Cheeks and the area under the eyes become hollower, and wrinkles and furrows form at the sides of our mouth, on our forehead, and our smile isn’t as full.
Why does this happen? The fat just under our skin, called subcutaneous fat, that plumps our cheeks and the areas around our eyes, starts to disappear.
What exactly is JUVÉDERM?
Juvéderm is a smooth, gel-like hyaluronic acid facial filler that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the early 2000s. Since then, millions of patients have used fillers like Juvederm to improve the appearance of wrinkles, add volume, and smooth the contours of the face. In fact, hyaluronic acid filler applications including Juvederm were the second-most common non-surgical cosmetic procedure done in the United States in 2020 after neurotoxin applications like Botox which topped the list.
Are Juvéderm injections painful?
Juvederm is mixed with lidocaine to prevent discomfort. Most patients are very comfortable and receive injections without the use of ice or topical numbing. Patients who compare receiving injections of both Botox and Juvéderm generally say that Juvéderm is less painful.
What areas can Juvéderm treat?
Juvéderm can be used to treat a number of areas including smile lines, (creases from the bottom of the nose to the chin), eye hollows (darken areas underneath the eyes) and for jaw, chin and lip augmentation and volume loss in the hands.
What to expect during your Rhode Island Juvederm appointment
After making an appointment with our office, please read the before- and after-care instructions page to alleviate pain and possible side effects found with all injections. Once in the office, you will be given a thorough consultation, where we will discuss any questions, concerns, and your desired results.
Our consultation determines the ways Juvederm can give you your desired results. We target specific areas of your face and the appropriate depth of the injections, so you get the benefits you’re looking for. Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm are safe and provide amazing, consistent results for our clients.
At our Providence office, we inject Juvederm to fill the areas needing volume:
- Hollow areas of the cheeks
- Wrinkles around the lips or to fill thinning lips
- Chin contour that needs more definition
- Furrows that have formed under the eyes
After consultation, filler injections usually take less than 30 minutes. When you leave our office, you will be able to see the results of Juvederm. More good news – the effects can last up to two years.
Some clients see small spots of bruising at the injection sites, but any discoloration can usually be covered with a light touch of concealer for a few days as the bruising disappears. To help avoid potential bruising, try to avoid taking aspirin or drinking alcohol in the days or weeks before your appointment with us. Also, on the unlikely chance that you are unhappy with your results, an enzyme is available to break down the hyaluronic acids.
The evolution of facial fillers and how they’ve become a safe cosmetic procedure
If you’re looking to smooth the look of deep wrinkles or add volume to your cheeks, lips, or chin, you join generations of people on a similar quest. Throughout history, men and women have been experimenting with ways to smooth their skin and make wrinkles disappear.
Shortly after the hypodermic syringe was first made in the mid-1800s to administer medicine and vaccines, the device soon found use as a beauty tool used to help fill deep lines and plump cheeks and lips.
By the late 1800s, people were saying yes to injections of paraffin, a petroleum byproduct, which was thankfully dropped as an aesthetic treatment after a myriad of complications. Lucky for us and due to continued research and safety guidelines, injections continued to evolve to where they are today.
There are different types of Juvederm you may have head of: Juvederm Voluma XC, Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure XC, Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC. Each has a slightly different application and is selected based on your evaluation.
What is Juvederm and how is it manufactured?
Juvederm is made from synthetically produced hyaluronic acids (HA) that mimic the natural hyaluronic acids found in almost all living cells.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that the body uses as one of the building blocks for cells. When not used as a building material for cells, HA binds to water and creates a gelatin-like substance that is perfect for filling volume loss in the face.
HA was first discovered in 1934 by Dr. Endre Balazs. Through decades of research, Dr. Balazs discovered that HA helped diminish pain caused by arthritis. It was first used as a serum injected into the arthritic knees of racehorses. After using the substance safely on horses, he then had it manufactured as a lubricant for the arthritic knees in humans. Today, you will find it being injected to cushion the joints under the trade names Orthovisc and Synvisc.
There have been thousands of studies and clinical trials using hyaluronic acids. Although all medications carry risk, the extensive research conducted over the past 70 years has confirmed that the long-term risks with HA are minimal.
